A second route enters via Kigumba and the Kichumbanyobo/Bugungu approach, and a third, more scenic option, runs from Masindi through Budongo Forest and descends the Rift Valley escarpment to Bugungu Gate on the southern bank, delivering you almost at Paraa itself with a dramatic overlook of the Nile floodplain on the way down. Self-drivers with a bit more confidence should take this escarpment route at least once — the view from the top, before the descent, is one of the best in the park.
Departing north instead of returning south — exiting via Tangi Gate to Pakwach — is the route to take if you are continuing on to Gulu, Kidepo Valley, or West Nile, and it is fully tarmac from Pakwach onward.
Reading The Park: Murchison Falls’ Self Drive Game Tracks
Once inside, the park splits cleanly into two halves connected by the Paraa ferry.
The southern bank holds Kichumbanyobo Gate, Bugungu Gate, Red Chilli Rest Camp, Murchison River Lodge and Paraa Safari Lodge. Game density here is lower than the north, but you will still see kob, warthog, baboon and occasional elephant on the drive in, and the southern bank is where the launch cruise departs from and where the road up to the Top of the Falls begins.
The northern bank, reached by the ferry, is where the serious game viewing happens. - The launch cruise departs from Paraa jetty, typically at 09:00 and 14:00, and runs roughly three hours upstream along the Victoria Nile to the base of the falls.
